City council approves land transfer to senior center

Posted

During the Kemmerer City Council meeting on May 13, a public hearing was held about the possible sale of a lot totaling just over 23,000 square feet, located at 105 JC Penney Dr. Although the senior center owns the building there, they would like to purchase the land it sits on.

The senior center requested a transfer of title for the property with an appraised value of $47,000. The city has been leasing the land to the senior center for $1. The deed was originally granted to the city to be used as a park, but has been used by the senior center.

The Kemmerer Senior Center presented to the council how a signed deed for a transferred title would benefit the city economically, including an increase in jobs and tax revenue. A written statement from the senior center noted they provide services and companionship to elders who are necessary to the growth of the community.

It was also mentioned that the center has hosted a retirement dinner for UMWA miners, which brings people in from surrounding states and helps families in the community have support in the caretaking of senior family members.

It was decided that transferring the land deed to the senior center would be an economic advantage for the city and council members agreed it’s important to support the facility, which provides vital services to those in need in the community.

In other matters, the council discussed the Wyoming Department of Transportation planning a road construction project which includes reconstruction of the sidewalk, curb, and gutter at three intersections for ADA upgrades.

To construct the project, the department is requesting a temporary construction permit. The department’s appraiser estimated the fair market value of the area to be around $320. The mayor was authorized to sign an agreement between the city and WYDOT for the project.
