Chula Vista, Calif. (March 8, 2021) -- Wyoming opened play at the Lamkin San Diego Classic on Monday and ended the day with a round of 306 (+18), placing the Cowboys in 16th place out of 20 teams heading into Tuesday’s second of three rounds.  Cowboy junior Carl Underwood shot an opening round of 73 (+1) and is tied for 33rd place out of 112 golfers.  He is six shots out of the lead.

The University of San Diego leads in the team competition.  The Toreros posted a 283 (-5) and hold a two-stroke lead over USC.  Sam Harned of Nevada fired an opening round of 67 (-5) and will enter the second round with a narrow one-stroke lead over four other individuals who posted rounds of 68 (-4).

The Cowboys other four players this week include sophomore Tyler Severin, who is tied for 49th at 74 (+2), and sophomore Kirby Coe-Kirkham, who shot a 78 (+4) on Monday to tie for 86th.  Sophomore Jared Edeen and senior Dan Starzkinski are tied for 102nd at 81 (+9).

“I’m proud of the way Carl (Underwood) and Tyler (Severin) competed today,” said Joe Jensen, Wyoming Director of Golf.  “Kirby (Coe-Kirkham) played well for much of the day, but had a tough finish.

“This is a very, very difficult golf course, and it is a different style of play with very heavy air.  We were in good shape at the turn, but we had a difficult back nine.  I can see our guys still aren’t totally comfortable and haven’t been able to get in a rhythm yet as we are still early in the season.

“Honestly, we need more from the bottom of our lineup.  We had to count an 81 in our team score today, and it is difficult to be competitive in the team competition having to count a big score like that.  But tomorrow is a new day.  We showed what we were capable of in the first nine holes today.  We just need to put a complete round together tomorrow.”

Wyoming will tee off Tuesday in the second round of the San Diego Classic beginning at 7:30 a.m., Pacific Time (8:30 a.m., M.T.)  The Cowboys will be paired with Nevada, San Jose State and Denver on Tuesday.

The Lamkin San Diego Classic is being hosted at the San Diego Country Club by San Diego State.  The course measures 7,033 yards and plays to a par of 72.
