Lady Rangers fourth as a team; teams combine for 12 placers

The Kemmerer High School track and field teams got a sneak peak at the venue that will host the 2A West Regional Meet in a few weeks, competing Friday at the Shoshoni Invitational.

While head coach Phil Thatcher decided to rest his relay teams – and quite a few of his athletes on the boys’ side were unable to make the trip – the team still performed well, with the Lady Rangers placing fourth as a team, and the Rangers competing hard with what they had.

“Friday was kind of a different day for us – we only had about half our team,” said KHS head coach Phil Thatcher. “There was a band trip going on, so we had to share some kids. We didn’t have any boys’ throwers, didn’t have any relays – just a lot of individual stuff. It was cold, and a little windier. We competed well – the girls still took fourth, with only about half of them there, out of 22 teams that were up there, so that was pretty good to see. But we got to see a lot of the competition in our region, so it was good to see those guys. We’ve got some stiff competition.”

The KHS track and field teams will be in Evanston Tuesday for the Evanston Invitational.

“We’ll have the whole team in Evanston, I’m hoping,” Thatcher said. “We’re feeling pretty good about where we’re at, and we’re looking forward to the last couple of weeks of the season before regionals and state.”

Lady Rangers

KHS junior Laynee Walker led the charge for the Lady Rangers, winning the pole vault with a height of nine feet.

“Laynee was running into a headwind that was just so cold,” Thatcher said. “For the first two or three hours, it was just miserable.”

In the track events, Walker placed third in the 300 hurdles (49.56) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.29); she also ran the 100 meter dash, placing ninth (13.47).

Natasha Martinez placed in the 100 meters, finishing eighth, with a state-qualifying time of 13.44; Martinez finished 10th in the 400 meters, posting a time of 1:07.02. Claire Crosland was the top Lady Ranger in the 200 meters, finishing 19th (29.93), while Laranda Waldner finished 26th in the 800 meters (3:16.39).

In the field events, the Lady Rangers placed four in the discus, led by a second-place finish from Nadia Runnion, with a throw of 108 feet, 10.5 inches; Kylie Price was third, with a throw of 101 feet, 2.5 inches. Both Runnion and Price’s throws were state qualifiers. Janae Skidmore finished fourth (89’3”), while Ella Thatcher finished eighth (82’4”).

Price also placed in the shot put, finishing sixth, with a toss of 29 feet, 8.25 inches. Skidmore was seventh, with a toss of 29 feet, 5.5 inches.

Tyler Thatcher finished 10th in the triple jump (29’4.5”), while Claire Crosland was 12th in the long jump (12’8”).

Rangers

Bridger Anderson and Bryson McGill both recorded Top 5-finishes for the Rangers in their respective events, with Anderson placing fifth in the 400 meters (56.04) and McGill placing fifth in the high jump (5’4”). Anderson also finished 11th in the 200 meters (24.63) and 25th in the long jump (15’9”); McGill was 32nd in the 400 meters (1:01.60) and 43rd in the 200 meters (26.21).

Other notable performances included Jace Bullington in the 400 meters (10th, 57.12), Brent Erickson in the high jump (10th, 5’2”), Gabe Platt in the 3200 meters (16th, 14:30.04) and Chase Benson in the 100 meters (90th, 14.59).
