The Celtic Culture is steeped in history and traditions.  The Celts originated in Ireland, Scotland, Brittany and Wales.  They built religious and ceremonial structures such as Stonehenge in England and Newgrange in Ireland.

Most of these structures were used to count the season and believed to be places of worship during the harvest season.  Some may have even been burial sites, such as Poulnabrone Dolmen in Ireland.

Construction of Stonehenge began in 3,100 B.C. and was finished in 1,600 B.C.  It is located in Wiltshire, England and consists of an outer ring of stones with a height of 13 feet and seven feet wide.  The stones weigh, on average, 25 tons

Stonehenge was also built by Neolithic humans. Stonehenge was used for the summer and winter solstice calculating/rituals and as a burial ground. There are over 1,300 stone circles throughout Britain and Ireland.

Newgrange World Heritage Site dates back to 3,200 B.C., located in County Meath. Newgrange has large mounds built with layers of earth and stone. Inside the mounds are passages and tombs. The purpose of the mounds is assumed to be for religious celebrations relating to the solstices and burials.

Poulnabrone Dolmen consists of three standing portal stones and one capstone.  The dolmen is located in County Clare, in the Burren on one of the most desolate and high spots. The capstone date is estimated to be from 4,200 - 2,900 B.C., constructed by the Neolithic farmers.

The site was used for either rituals, as a burial site or possibly both. There are over 220 dolmens that are scattered throughout Europe.

It is almost incomprehensible how long ago people inhabited these sites.  That is what makes visiting these countries so fascinating. It is the pull of history with a little bit of magic and mystery.

When visiting these sites, there are things you should consider doing before you go: First, do your research by checking out travel guides at your local library. Second, map out the sites you want to visit, Third, decide on transportation/how to get to these sites. Lastly, book your flight and accommodations and go!

At the Lincoln County Library we have the “Essential Ireland 2025 Fodor’s Guide,” “Great Britain Lonely Planet Guide” and “Scotland Lonely Planet Guide” to help you plan your trip. Happy travels and enjoy the journey.
