Posted

The annual Tour de Wyoming bike ride is in southwest Wyoming this year. The riders will stop in Kemmerer and Cokeville as part of their bike tour.

The Tour de Wyoming is an annual bike tour throughout the state of Wyoming. The first tour was completed in 1997. Each year the route changes to include different areas of the state. The 2018 tour takes place July 15 to July 20.

This year’s route includes stops in Afton, Cokeville, Kemmerer, Big Piney, Pinedale and Alpine.

This event is a ride, rather than a race, to allow riders to take their time and enjoy the beautiful views Wyoming has to offer. The tour will journey 333 miles in six days. Each year, the Tour de Wyoming is limited to 350 riders. Riders come from all across the United States, Canada and even Australia.

The tour kicks off in Afton. From there, it heads south to tackle Salt River Pass, topping off at an elevation of 7,630 feet. The ride will pop into Idaho for a few miles before re-entering Wyoming and spending the night in the community of Cokeville.

The next day continues south before curving east through Nugget Canyon and then spending the evening in the town of Kemmerer. From Kemmerer, the riders head north into the Green River Basin and spend the night in Big Piney. The next day is a short one, where the tour pedals north through the Basin in the shadow of the Wind River Mountains.

They pass through the small town of Daniel and then turn east to spend the night in the town of Pinedale.  Day Five is the toughest as the tour heads west, pedaling through Hoback Canyon and then, at Hoback Junction, turning south to follow the Snake River.

The final night is spent just outside the town of Alpine  The final day is a short ride through Star Valley to return to Afton.
