The Kemmerer High School volleyball team opened the 2A West Regional Tournament in Riverton Friday on a high note Friday afternoon with a win against Wind River, but soon came back to Earth Friday night and Saturday morning losing to Rocky Mountain and Big Piney, ending their season.

Friday afternoon’s match against Wind River — a team the Lady Rangers lost to in early September, and tied later that month — was a 5-set thriller that kept fans on the edges of their seats.

The Lady Cougars won the first set 25-22, though Kemmerer battled back to take set two 25-20. The Lady Rangers took set three 26-24, but fell apart in set four, losing 25-11. Shaking off the lopsided set, Kemmerer took control of set five, then held off a late charge by Wind River to take the set — and the match — 15-13.

Later that day, the Lady Rangers found themselves in a four-set battle, this time coming up short against Rocky Mountain 3-1. The Lady Grizz won the first two sets by identical 25-18 scores, though the Lady Rangers battled back to win set three, 25-17. Kemmerer ran out of steam at that point, dropping set four 25-15.

The Lady Rangers squared off against 2A Southwest Quadrant rival Big Piney Saturday in a loser-out match. The two teams had split the season series, and this time, the rubber match went to the Lady Punchers in a five-set battle of the top two seeds out of the Southwest, 3-2. Kemmerer won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-14, but lost the next three, 25-23, 25-23 and 15-13, ending their season.
