Reviewing the ‘Silver in the Bone’ series

In Alexandra Bracken’s “Silver in the Bone” series, Arthurian legend is reimagined through a dark and modern lens. The series establishes itself in the contemporary fantasy genre with its compelling characters, rich world-building, and gripping narrative.

The story revolves around Tamsin Lark, a determined and resourceful relic hunter who has scraped by in an underground world filled with danger and magic. Tamsin was abandoned by her guardian as a child after being orphaned as a child.

She dedicates her life to breaking the curse afflicting her brother, Cabell. During her quest, she uncovers secrets that shake her world to its core in Avalon, the mystical and treacherous realm of Arthurian lore.

Among the series’ highlights are the characters. Tamsin’s resilience, sharp tongue, and vulnerability make her a standout protagonist.

The series beautifully depicts her transformation from a reluctant hero to someone willing to confront her fears and embrace her destiny. Her relationships, especially with the enigmatic Emrys, give the story emotional depth and complexity. Her relationship with her brother Cabell gets pushed to the very limits.

Cabell’s secret, which is hidden from him, is also brought to light.  Once Cabell’s secret comes to light strains the siblings’ relationship as they battle between where they think they belong and where their family has been built together after their guardian Nash abandoned them both.

In addition to uniquely reimagining Arthurian mythology, the series thrives on its innovative storytelling. Bracken masterfully intertwines familiar elements — like the legendary Excalibur and the fabled Avalon — with her unique, dark twist. Avalon is a hauntingly beautiful and menacing place, vividly described to immerse readers in its eerie allure. Fusing modern relic-hunting adventure with ancient legend creates a fresh and exciting narrative.

While the series’ intricate plot and layered mythology are impressive, the pacing can sometimes feel uneven, particularly in the middle installments. However, the beautiful detail, and images the author makes using words to show the scenes are beautiful. The climactic moments and the emotional resonance of the characters more than compensate for these minor flaws.

Ultimately, the “Silver in the Bone” series is a spellbinding journey through magic, mystery, and self-discovery. It’s a must-read for fans of dark fantasy, Arthurian retellings, and strong, multifaceted heroines. Alexandra Bracken has crafted a tale that lingers in the imagination long after the final page.
