With three individual champions, two runners-up, two third-place finishers and 15 total trips to the podium, the Kemmerer High School wrestling team won an unprecedented fourth consecutive 2A West Regional Tournament over the weekend at Big Piney.
The Rangers finished in the top spot with 177 points, followed by Thermopolis with 151 points. Greybull/Riverside wrestled its way to third with 145 points, while Cokeville and host Big Piney rounded out the top five with 140 and 119 points, respectively. A total of 15 Rangers placed in the top eight of their respective classes, earning them a spot at next weekend’s 2A State Wrestling Championships in Casper.
Competing at the 4A West Regional Tournament in Evanston, the Lady Rangers also had a weekend to remember, placing third out of 24 teams. Star Valley finished in the top spot with 227 points, followed by Pinedale in second with 131 points and Kemmerer in third, with 107.5 points. Lyman and Natrona County rounded out the Top 5, with 92 and 86 points, respectively.
For the boys, five Rangers advanced to the championship match in their respective classes, with three emerging as champions. Roany Proffit claimed his fourth consecutive title at 138 pounds, while Graison Kelley at 165 pounds and Owen Barton at 190 pounds won their second consecutive 2A West championships. Abel Jiminez (113 pounds) and Braxton Pope (175 pounds) finished as runners-up.
On the girls’ side, three Lady Rangers earned a spot in the championship match, with all three winning championships. Riley Meyer took the top spot at 100 pounds, Laynee Walker won the title at 115 pounds and Kaylie Julander made it back-to-back 2A West titles at 140 pounds.
Rangers
Roany Proffit went 4-0 for the tournament, winning all four of his matches by pin; he pinned Michael Bassett (Greybull/Riverside) in the first round of the championship match to win the title at 138 pounds.
At 165 pounds, Graison Kelley went 3-0, pinning Samuel Skelton (Thermopolis) in the first round to win the championship.
Owen Barton went 3-0 at 190 pounds, with back-to-back pins over Corbyn Godfrey (Greybull/Riverside) and Mack Buckner (Thermopolis), then winning by technical fall over Ryder Pope (Cokeville) to claim the title.
At 113 pounds, Abel Jimenez won a 10-8 decision over Caleb Brown (Big Piney) in the semifinals to advance to the championship match; he lost in the finals to Dyllan Myers (Thermopolis).
Braxton Pope won a close 11-10 decision over Brody Sorensen (Thermopolis) in the semifinals to advance to the title match at 175 pounds; he was edged out 5-3 by Kashton Walker (Cokeville) for the championship.
Finishing third for the Rangers were Ricky Schneider at 106 pounds, and Noah Parks at 150 pounds. Michael Symons finished fourth at 144 pounds, as did Logan Julander at 157 pounds, Bridger Anderson at 175 pounds and Colter Krell at 215 pounds.
Also placing in the top eight and earning a trip to state were: Austin Ruvalcaba at 126 pounds (8th place), Mienn Skinner at 138 pounds (6th place), Dominic Pope at 157 pounds (8th place) and Jace Barton at 285 pounds (8th place).
Lady Rangers
Three of the seven Lady Rangers who competed in Evanston over the weekend finished first in their respective weight classes, with Riley Meyer finishing in the top spot at 100 pounds, Laynee Walker winning the title at 115 pounds and Kaylie Julander winning her second consecutive 4A West Championship at 140 pounds.
At 100 pounds, Meyer posted a 4-0 record, pinning all four of her opponents en route to the championship. After opening the tournament with back-to-back pins over Constance Peterson (Star Valley) and Aislynn Vroman (Wind River), Meyer pinned Hailee Cooper (Riverton) in the semifinals to advance to the title match. Squaring off against Carlee Angell (Star Valley) for the championship, Meyer pinned Angell at the 4:42 mark.
After pinning her first three opponents at 115 pounds — Harley Spinden (Powell), Aurora Colvin (Star Valley) and Teagan Rakisits (Cody) — Walker met Eleasah Horsley (Powell) in the finals.
Following teammate Meyer’s lead, Walker pinned Horsley in the first round to claim the championship, winning all four of her matches by pin.
Julander — the defending 4A West champion at 140 pounds — opened the tournament with a bye, then rattled off four straight pins — over Makyla Sweeney (Rock Springs), Lila Callister (Mountain View), Alexis Thompson (Pinedale) and Cara Andrews (Star Valley) in the championship match — to claim her second consecutive title.
Also placing in the top six and earning a trip to state were: Chrislyn Carlson at 105 pounds (1-2), Addison Anderson at 130 pounds (1-2) and Ella Kelley at 170 pounds (3-2). All three earned a spot in the 5th-place match; those matches weren’t wrestled Saturday
Millee Ellis scored points for the Lady Rangers at 110 pounds (1-2), but just missed qualifying for state.
