Lady Rangers swim to dual wins over Sublette, Evanston

Kemmerer wins 9 of 12 events at home, in Evanston; host conference next

With the 3A West Swimming and Diving Championships set to begin in Kemmerer this weekend, the KHS girls’ swimming and diving team spent last week fine-tuning things, winning a dual with Sublette County at home Friday, and following that Saturday with a win over Evanston.

“It was very productive,” said KHS head coach Amanda Aimone. “We treat dual meets a lot of the time as work meets, because the kids have to go back-to-back events and it can become tiring. However, we came home with qualifiers in new events, so that is a big plus.”

Friday’s dual against Sublette County saw the Lady Rangers win nine of 12 events, led by Logan Rogers and Charlie Boylen, who won both of their individual events. Rogers finished first in the 50 freestyle (28.13) and 100 butterfly (1:15.78), while Boylen was tops in the 200 freestyle (2:31.22) and the 100 backstroke (1:16.06).

Other individual winners included Payton Scherr in the 200 individual medley (2:58.68) and Hanna Walker in diving (253.95).

The Lady Rangers swept the relay events, with the team of Emileen Dearden, Kalyn Lockwood, Payton Scherr and Gabby Bartschi placing first in the 4x50 medley relay 2:25.07. Logan Rogers, Charlie Boylen, Kalyn Lockwood and Demi Thatcher placed first in the 4x50 freestyle relay (2:03.96), while the team of Charlie Boylen, Logan Rogers, Demi Thatcher and Payton Scherr were tops in the 4x100 relay (4:46.51).

“We did not have any new qualifiers, but athletes who qualified in new events,” Aimone said. “Emileen Dearden in the 100 back, Ally Bartschi in the 200 free and Gabby Bartschi in the 50 free. Overall, we had great efforts by the team, but Saige Erickson is really finding her groove. She is swimming well and cutting time everywhere.”

Kemmerer’s three divers finished 1-2-3, with Lockwood and Gabby Bartschi backing up Walker.

“The divers are doing well,” Aimone said. “Really perfecting their dives for the final weeks. Coach Willoughby does a great job, and I have no doubt that they will have the ability to perform strong.”

At Saturday’s dual in Evanston, the Lady Rangers again won nine events, including all three relays. Arya Newell won the 200 freestyle (2:30.34), Logan Rogers was tops in the 200 individual medley (2:26.59) and the 100 butterfly (1:07.39), Demi Thatcher won the 50 freestyle (29.12), Ally Bartschi finished first in the 500 freestyle (6:33.47) and Charlie Boylen was tops in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.59).

The Lady Rangers swept the relay events, with the team of Ally Bartschi, Payton Scherr, Kalyn Lookwood and Gabby Bartschi placing first in the 200 medley relay (2:10.25). Logan Rogers, Charlie Boylen, Kalyn Lockwood, Demi Thatcher won the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.54), while the team of Charlie Boylen, Logan Rogers, Demi Thatcher and Payton Scherr were tops in the 400 freestyle relay (4:15.41).

“The relays are doing great,” Aimone said. “I think we can put together three strong relays, and I think our goal is to get all three of them in the Top 6. It’s hard to tell who to put where for a couple of reasons. One, we have a lot of depth, and so many kids could contribute in so many places; two, you have to watch the rest of the state to see what they might do, and even then, you can’t be sure. It’s going to be fun.”

The Lady Rangers host the 3A West Conference Meet Friday and Saturday.
