It was a record-breaking week for the Kemmerer High School girls’ swimming and diving team, as the Lady Rangers won all 12 events at their Homecoming dual Wednesday, then finished fifth Saturday at the Pinedale Invitational.
“We had a wonderful week,” said KHS head coach Amanda Aimone. “Always with Homecoming, you wonder how it is going to go, because the kids are really busy with all the activities during the week. But overall, it was a great week for us.”
The week began Wednesday, with a clean sweep of events at the Lady Rangers’ Homecoming dual against Lyman, which Kemmerer won 133-62. Three school records fell during this meet, beginning with the 200 medley relay, a mark that had stood for 32 years. The team of Ally Bartschi, Charlie Boylen, Logan Rogers and Kalyn Lockwood set the new school standard with a time of 2:15.09.
“We actually had just honored Coach Greg Gray right before the medley was broken, and he had coached the kids who swam that record 32 years ago,” Aimone said. “It was almost like it was meant to be. He also had coached Kit Wickle, who previously held the 200 IM record before Charlie Boylen broke it that night.”
Boylen’s time of 2:42.95 in the 200 individual medley broke Wickle’s previous record, which had stood for 27 years. Boylen also won the 100 breaststroke, in a time of 1:21.49.
The third record to fall was the 6-dive record, set 14 years ago. Hanna Walker set the new standard, with a score of 260.50.
Others winning individual events were Payton Scherr in the 200 freestyle (2:42.88), Logan Rogers in both the 50 freestyle (28.33) and the 100 butterfly (1:18.73), Gabby Bartschi in the 100 freestyle (1:12.37), Arya Newell in the 400 freestyle and Ally Bartschi in the 100 backstroke (1:19.72).
The 200 freestyle relay team of Emileen Dearden, Ally Bartschi, Kalyn Lockwood and Demi Thatcher won the event in a time of 2:11.36, while Gabby Bartschi, Logan Rogers, Demi Thatcher and Charlie Boylen won the 400 freestyle relay, posting a time of 4:45.36.
Saturday found the Lady Rangers on the road at Pinedale for the Pinedale Invitational, placing a respectable fifth, despite only competing in nine of the 12 events.
Hanna Walker was the top finisher for Kemmerer, placing second in the diving event with a score of 226.40; fellow diver Kalyn Lockwood also placed in the Top 5, finishing fourth with a score of 179.50.
Charlie Boylen posted a pair of Top 5 finishes, placing third in the 50 freestyle (27.44) and fourth in the 100
butterfly (1:13.84). Logan Rogers was fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:16.38).
Top 10 finishes included Payton Scherr in the 500 freestyle (6th, 6:21.58) and the 200 individual medley (7th, 2:43.82), Demi Thatcher in the 200 individual medley (9th, 2:44.59) and Gabby Bartschi in diving (7th, 163.80).
“We didn’t have new qualifiers, but some new events for kids,” Aimone said. “Payton Scherr had a great meet in Pinedale, with qualifying in the 200 IM and swimming a massive PR in the 500 free, cutting 18 seconds. Demi Thatcher also swam so well in Pinedale. She put two new events, the 200 IM and 100 free onto her qualifying list. Gabby Bartschi also dove to a new 6-dive personal best in Pinedale. Saige Erickson and Jette Bischoff also had a great meet in Pinedale, cutting a lot of time from their events. Ally Bartschi continues to swim tough for us as does Arya Newell and Emileen Dearden. These three ladies are all about the ‘We’ before ‘Me’ idea which makes us successful as a team.
In the relay events, the relay team of Charlie Boylen, Logan Rogers, Kalyn Lockwood and Demi Thatcher finished third in the 200 medley relay (2:08.05) and second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.68).
Despite strong finishes by the relay teams, Aimone said the rosters are still being tinkered with.
“I wouldn’t say I have the relays solidified yet,” she said. “The girls are making it really hard to decide what to do. Which is a problem I want to always have, because that means the kids are working hard and want to help their team. We are working through some different lineups, and haven’t decided on anything yet. Overall, I’m very happy with what we are doing.”
The Lady Rangers head to Rawlins Saturday for the Rawlins Invitational.
