The Kemmerer City Council met on Monday, June 9, to hear a series of updates and presentations, including a safety initiative from the MC2 Team and a year-end report from the Fossil Basin Promotion Board.
Lisa Mueller with the MC2 Team presented an overview of the Safe Routes for All initiative and discussed various safety-related issues affecting the community. Mueller shared background about the organization and its funding at the national level.
“We are most known for being grant writers,” she said, “but that is not the only thing we do.”
Focusing on a preventive approach to public safety, Mueller explained the importance of identifying potential infrastructure risks before accidents occur.
“We want to make a case before something happens,” she said. “This preventive, forward thinking is going to be in your benefit.”
She also touched on changes in federal funding and how her organization is navigating them.
“We have been awarded some federal funding, but some contracts have changed under the Trump administration,” Mueller said. “It’s been a little bit different but there are lots of federal and funding opportunities.”
Kemmerer City Administrator Brian Muir emphasized the importance of being mindful when it comes to matching grant funds. In response, Mueller reassured the council that there are strategies to plan for costs and to understand how to strengthen grant applications.
“You can always negotiate a contract,” she said.
The Fossil Basin Promotion Board provided its annual report to the council, updating them on efforts to promote the region and increase tourism visibility.
In other business, the council passed the city’s budget and gave final approval to proposed items from the Capital X Projects. Prioritized projects include infrastructure improvements such as streets and sidewalks, a review of city ordinances, employee compensation, and the creation of a public portal on the city website.
