The Kemmerer Gazette was recognized earlier this month during the Wyoming Press Association’s 126th annual convention. The Gazette won a major award and several other awards in the 2024 Pacemaker Contest. The awards were announced at the WPA convention, which was held in Cheyenne’s Little America Hotel Jan. 16-18.
Gazette staff earned first place in Typographic Excellence, a major award.
Reporter Rana Jones earned two awards including first place in the News-Feature Story about a sled dog racer.
“Nice pacing and storytelling,” a judge wrote of Jones’ story. “We were able to see the trainer’s passion and hear her voice.”
Jones was also recognized with an honorable mention for her story about TerraPower breaking ground near Kemmerer.
“Wonderful subject to cover. … good work!” wrote a judge.
Sports editor Don Cogger also earned some hardware in Cheyenne. Cogger took second place in the Sports News Story category with “Lady Rangers win 2A State Track and Field Championship.”
“Thorough coverage of a state championship,” a judge wrote. “Nice comments from coaches and athletes.”
Cogger also received an honorable mention for a story about local girl Tazlynn Wagner titled “Local golfer on pace for record tournament season in 2024.”
A judge wrote, “A well-written story about a local prodigy. Enjoyed the attention to striking a balance between constant competition and living a well-balanced life.”
Cogger was also recognized for his work behind the camera. He took second place and received an honorable mention in the Sports Feature Category for “Lady Rangers volleyball winless at Cokeville Invitational,” and “Proffit 3-peats,” respectively.
A judge wrote of the volleyball photo, “Captures the highs and lows of sports emotions all in one photo. Nice!”
Of the photo capturing Roany Proffit celebrating after winning his third state wrestling championship, a judge wrote, “A good capture of the emotions conveyed in sports.”
Finally, Cogger was recognized — along with managing editor Bryon Glathar — for his headline writing. The duo earned second place in the Headline Writing category.
The contest included entries originally printed between Nov. 1, 2023, to Oct. 31, 2024. Journalists from South Dakota donated their time and served as judges for the contest.
The contest splits Wyoming newspapers into three divisions based on circulation. Division C, in which the Gazette competes, saw the Greybull Standard win General Excellence, a major award. The Dubois Frontier took home the Advertising Excellence award. The Greybull Standard also won the award for Editorial Excellence.
