Cokeville girls go 3-0, boys go 2-1 on hardwood

KEMMERER — The Cokeville Lady Panthers competed in the Fossil Country Basketball Tournament on Friday and Saturday, January 10-11, in Kemmerer, sweeping the competition and finishing the weekend 3-0.

Their first game on Friday was against the Lady Punchers of Big Piney. The Lady Panthers took the win 50-42. Addison Barnes had 24 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Mia Dayton had 10 points and 5 assists. Maddy Dayton had 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Bailey Bird pulled down 4 rebounds and had 3 assists.

Their next game brought the Lady Braves of Star Valley. The Lady Panthers added another win, 32-24. Barnes had 18 points and 4 steals. Bird pulled down 5 rebounds.

Their final game of the tournament was on Saturday against the Lady Rangers on their home court. It was a battle, but the Lady Panthers came away with the win 50-47. Barnes had 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Maddy Dayton had 11 points and 6 assists. Bird had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Mia Dayton had 10 points and 5 assists. The Lady Panthers will host the Lady Tigers of Encampment on Friday, Jan. 17, starting at 4 p.m.

The Panthers also competed in the Fossil Country Basketball Tournament over the weekend hosted by the Kemmerer Rangers, in which the boys’ basketball team went 2-1.

Their first matchup on Friday was against the Punchers of Big Piney. This was a close matchup down to the wire with the Panthers coming away with the win 41-38. The Punchers jumped out to an early lead at the end of one, 8-13.

The Panthers made up some ground in the second to go into the half down by four 15-19. The Panthers owned the third quarter scoring 17 to the Punchers’ 9. They were able to hold on in the fourth to get the win 41-38.

Justin Moyes led the scoring with 16 points. Hudson Himmerich, Moyes, Joey Thomas and Blaze Plowman each had a bucket from behind the three-point line. Plowman had 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

Their next game was against the Braves of Star Valley. The Panthers jumped out to the early lead and at the half were up 27-16. They also outscored the Braves in the third, 18-11, to increase their lead to 45-27. The Braves put up a good fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough, as the Panthers came away with the win, 54-44.

Moyes had 17 points to lead the Panther scoring followed by Kalob Haderlie with 13. Himmerich and Plowman had 9 each. Plowman had 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Kayson Walker had 8 rebounds and 3 assists.

Their final game of the tournament came on Saturday against the home team, the Kemmerer Rangers. The Rangers jumped out to take the lead after one, 10-14, but the Panthers fought back in the second to take the lead at half 21-19. It was still close going into the fourth with the Panthers up 34-31.

The Rangers seemed to find their rhythm in the fourth, outscoring the Panthers 6-20 to snatch the win, 40-51, over the Panthers.

Walker led the Panther scoring with 11, while Haderlie and Moyes each scored 9. Walker also led the rebounding with 8 along with 6 steals. Dash Nate had 4 steals. The Panthers will be home on Friday against the Encampment Tigers beginning at 4 p.m.
