American Legion donates to community organizations during annual luncheon

KEMMERER — The American Legion Post 55 hosted its annual donation event on Monday, Dec. 16, at the Kemmerer Senior Center, where local organizations were awarded funds to support their community efforts.

The Legion distributed $300 to the Angel Tree Foundation, $500 to the senior center, and $300 to Paws and Claws Animal Adoption Center.

The luncheon event included some representatives from beneficiaries. Christy Killian, the new executive director of the senior center, accepted the $500 donation on behalf of the center.

Korkee Crank of the Angel Tree Foundation received a $300 check, which will be used to purchase Christmas gifts for children in need. The local Ace Hardware housed the Angel Tree, which gave community members a chance to purchase gifts for locals in need.

Legion Commander Robert Bowen explained the significance of the donation to the senior center, emphasizing the challenges it faces.

“Because of the financial hardship that the center has been placed in, we want to make sure there is still money in the coffers for senior events and trips,” Bowen said.

He said such events are essential to keeping spirits high and seniors engaged.

Bowen also praised the community’s dedication to supporting children during the holidays. He explained that the Angel Tree donation would help cover any remaining ornaments, ensuring every child has a gift this Christmas.

“The community is amazing about taking care of kids with ornaments on the trees to make sure they have gifts for Christmas,” he said.

The funds distributed at the event were raised through various efforts, including support from the Episcopal Church, Unknown Saints and other local fundraisers. Additional funds came from the Commissioner’s Tag raffle, enabling the Legion to “pay it forward” and continue supporting Kemmerer’s community organizations.

This year’s donations reflect the spirit of giving, with Post 55 at the heart of efforts to uplift local causes.
