ExxonMobil employees act quickly to save life of delivery driver in medical distress

ExxonMobil is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our employees and contractors, and each of our facilities has immediate access to trained responders and resources, including many of our own employees who are qualified as emergency responders on onsite teams.

“Recently, the training that our employees receive was put to the test at the Shute Creek Gas Plant in Wyoming, when employees quickly mobilized to provide life-saving medical assistance to a delivery driver who was in medical distress. Thanks to their quick action, members of our LaBarge team are heroes.”

ExxonMobil’s Wyoming asset manager Matt McQueen said, “Every day we think about safety, and we prepare for the worst case so we are ready.

On Jan. 8, the ops foreman at the facility discovered a delivery driver on the ground and unresponsive. He immediately activated the site’s emergency procedures via radio communications with the control room while simultaneously assessing the situation and initiating CPR.

An all-call went out on the radio to ask for Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) support. Facility EMR personnel and the site’s ambulance responded to the scene with the emergency medical supplies that are in “jump kits” throughout the facility, including automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The control room also quickly requested an ambulance from the closest medical services facility.

CPR continued alongside the use of the AED, and eventually the patient regained a pulse and was able to breathe on his own prior to be being transferred to a local hospital in Kemmerer. He is now recovering well with his family thanks to the heroic efforts of our employees who quite literally saved his life.

“The team was ready, and it allowed a driver to return home to their family,” McQueen said. “I continue to be amazed by our people and their commitment to keeping each other safe as well as those with whom we work.”

Following the event, a medical report was provided to a local doctor – and the feedback was nothing short of glowing.

“The successful outcome of this unfortunate event looks like it occurred solely because of the very prompt and appropriate care given by [the LaBarge] team,” the response read. “That report is completely textbook perfect! [ExxonMobil’s] training program is to be commended, as should the team who responded to this emergency.”
