New athletic complex is progressing

Modified: Thursday, Sep 26th, 2013

The site of the new athletic complex

In recent months, one of the hottest topics of conversation in and around Kemmerer has been the construction of the new athletic complex. Just two months ago, the site of the complex—which is next to Kemmerer Middle School and the Recreation Center—resembled little more than a clearing full of dirt.

Today, the progress of the construction is clearly visible, and according to school superintendent Teresa Chaulk, the project is coming along exceedingly well.

"We're excited for it to be completed so we can have an awesome complex for students and the community," said superintendent Chaulk.

The new athletic complex will represent a tremendous upgrade for Kemmerer athletics. In addition to the turf football field, the complex will include lights so that night games in Kemmerer will be possible. There will also be an eight lane track circling the football field, home bleachers to seat 1,000 and away bleachers for 150, a six-compartment press box, restrooms, upgraded sound and video capabilities, and a concession stand.

During the planning stages of this project, the estimated time of completion for the athletic complex was homecoming weekend, which is in October.

There were delays, however, with the Army Corps of Engineers before the construction could begin, and the timeline had to be pushed back five weeks. Superintendent Chaulk is optimistic that, weather permitting, the complex will be complete by the middle of November.

The current football field will be available for appropriate community activities and to use for practice by visiting teams.
