John Milne Callaghan, 88, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, in Wilsonville, Ore. He was born in the mining town of Blazon to William and Helen Callaghan on Aug. 9, 1924.
The family moved from Blazon to Kemmerer, where John graduated from high school. He later enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war ended and he was honorably discharged, he moved to Portland, Ore., where his family now resides.
John attended the University of Portland, where he met Lura Dell Hall, whom he married in 1952. The two owned and operated The Barlow Trail Inn in Welches, Ore., for years. John was a teacher for over 25 years, first in Estacada, Ore., and later in Sandy, Ore., where he taught and served as principal. He concluded his career as superintendent at Welches School District.
He and Lura traveled quite a bit and were avid gardeners. They retired to Springridge at Charbonneau, in Wilsonville, Ore., and remained there until his death.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lura Dell; his sister, Helen Clark; nieces Kathleen and Leslie Clark; nephew Stuart Clark; and grandnieces Emily and Abigail Clark.
At John's request, there will be no services. Remembrances can be made to the University of Portland School of Nursing. Interment took place at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
