The Panther wrestlers traveled to Riverton for the annual Ron Thon Invitational on Friday, Feb. 1 and 2. This tournament has been labeled “The Best of the Best” due to the fact that all of the top wrestling teams throughout the state come to compete against one another. They have two divisions, a Varsity and a J.V. Division. The Panthers entered seven wrestlers in the Varsity Division and eight in the JV Division. Three wrestlers placed in the JV Division: Raustin Grandy (182) finished with a fourth place medal, Ellis Toomer (132) finished in third place and Jayson Robertson (113) finished in second place.
As a team, the eight wrestlers finished fourteenth out of 42 teams. The seven varsity wrestlers did a little better in their division, with four wrestlers in the top 4.
Macen Petersen (132) finished in fourth place and Brigham Teichert (145) finished in fourth place. Two Panthers, James Teichert and Colter Linford, were able to advance into the finals; Linford (170) had a rematch from the Don Runner with Jacob Beck of Lovell. Linford won the match at the Don Runner but Beck of Lovell outscored Linford here at the Ron Thon, giving Linford the second place finish.
Teichert (126) faced Mamalis of Green River in the finals. The match became lopsided as Mamalis developed a 7-2 lead with only 25 seconds left in the third period. Teichert managed a “granby” move that gave him two points reversal and three points near fall to tie the match at the end of regulation. In overtime Teichert scored a takedown to win the championship match and become the first Cokeville Panther in history to win the Ron Thon.
The Panthers finished tied for eleventh with Lovell among the 37 teams competing. The Panthers prepare for their final tournament prior to Regionals by competing in the Carbon County Invite in Saratoga. The tournament will take place on Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9.
