BIG PINEY – The Rangers kept the score within eight points throughout the game played against the Big Piney Punchers on Friday, Jan. 4. Kemmerer held Big Piney to seven offensive rebounds, but had a season low of 13 turnovers. They shot seven of eight from the free throw line.

“Seven of eight from the free throw is great,” said coach Phil Thatcher. “But I would like to see us getting 12 to 15 free throws a game.”

The Rangers are still having their shots.

“We need to get inside more once we are in our half-court offense and then we need to make sure we are squaring up and taking good shots,” said Thatcher.

Kemmerer was tied with Big Piney 42-42 with 1:45 left in the game. But the Punchers had a 5-0 run and the Rangers ultimately fell to the Punchers 42-47.

“We met all of our team goals except our overall goal of holding Piney to 40 points or less,” said Thatcher. “We got behind in our rotation on zone and allowed too many open 8-12 foot jumpers. It wasn’t Piney getting second shots — it was we [who] gave them too many first shots.”

Kemmerer will be hosting Shoshoni on Friday, Jan. 11, and Pinedale on Saturday, Jan. 12.

“Shoshoni is another big conference game that we need to focus on,” said Thatcher. “They have been playing well lately and will give us all we can handle on Friday here at home. They have a new coach so their system will be a little new for us both, but I think if we take care of the things we can control — effort, defense, rotations, patience in offense rebounding — we will get the win. We will also work on staying composed the entire game. Against Mountain View and Big Piney both, the last couple of minutes in the fourth quarter hurt us. Pinedale will be another 3A team we get to play and test ourselves against.”
