DIAMONDVILLE — The Diamondville USA wrestling club started preparing their wrestlers for battle on Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Headed up by President Troy Vickery, the “Dominators” are a USA Wrestling sanctioned club that practices every Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. when head coach Clint Proffit teaches them — all 55 boys and girls — how to take down and defend themselves against their opponents. Proffit gets help with this daunting task from Troy Vickery, Lincoln Bauers and Cal, Steve and Levi Walker, in addition to the many parents that will jump in and lend a hand at any given moment.

The kids are taught a little bit of all three forms of wrestling: greco-roman, freestyle and school boy. Each style has its own set of rules and scoring system designed to emphasize different skill sets — like take-down or throws. Each style also has its own state tournament.

“We have enough kids that we have divided them up into an older group and a younger group. I’m hoping we have more kids that will be wanting to go to state that we’ll have some kids place this year,” said Proffit. “We are trying to get the kids ready for the Salt Lake Slam on Jan., 1 2013. That is a national tournament.”

The parents form the backbone of the club, because without them the kids would not be able to get to their many tournaments. Currently all tournaments are held in Utah, primarily because the Utah tournament locations are closer, but wrestling will begin in Wyoming in February 2013.

With a long season that doesn’t end until May 2013, the coaches would like to encourage kids between the ages of four and 12 to come join the team; there is still plenty of the season left.
