Norman C. Thornton ~ Jan. 8, 1931 April 19, 2012

Posted: Tuesday, Nov 13th, 2012

Norman C. Thornton, 81, of Sumpter, Ore., passed away on April 19, 2012.

Norm was born in Baker, Ore., to Earl and Eva (Skallish). He was schooled in Baker, including nine years at St. Francis Academy, learned to mine for gold with his father, and explored and hunted in the Elkhorn Mountains. In 1950 he married Marcia Carver and they shared their love of adventure over half of the U.S.

He worked at construction, drove logging trucks, and finished cement on huge projects like hospitals, airports and dams. He operated heavy equipment of all types.

In the 1970s he moved into mining supervision from coal to gold and from Montana to Texas. His "can do" attitude made him a winner and performer at all jobs. In Wyoming he joined the sheriff's department and became municipal judge of Diamondville all while working full time. After 25 years with Morrison Knudson Co., he retired to Sumpter, Ore.

Norm is survived by his son Michael (Susan) Thornton of Portland, Ore., grandson Kelly Thornton of Spokane, Wash., and great-grandson Cameron Thornton of Spokane.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marcia, and later by his beloved partner, Francis Moulton. Norm is also survived by numerous other people who were "family members" by love and circumstance, including Kemmerer resident Diane Mackinen, for who Norm was a special "uncle."
