Rangers hold on to beat Big Piney, 22-20

Posted: Thursday, Oct 4th, 2012

The Kemmerer Rangers' Trevor Simpson runs past the last of the Big Piney defensive line to score a touchdown during the opening kickoff on Friday, Sept. 28.

KEMMERER — The Kemmerer Rangers came out strong against the Big Piney Punchers when Trevor Simpson returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. Kemmerer scored their next touchdown on a pass from Matthew Archibald to Sidney Chaulk and the Rangers scored one more time in the first half of the game.

Kemmerer only allowed Big Piney one score during the first half of the game; going into halftime, the score was 22-7.

Kemmerer fans were happy with the boys’ lead going into the third quarter, but it wouldn’t last long.

Kemmerer errors, combined with a great effort from the Punchers, led by their quarterback ,#15 Luke Barron, reduced Kemmerer’s lead to only two points.

For the second week in a row, fans were on the edge of their seats for the last play of the game. Big Piney threw a “Hail Mary” pass that came up three yards short of scoring the winning touchdown.

“We made a ton of mental mistakes,” said Coach Rogers. “We came out hot, but then just kind of relaxed and held on for the rest of the game.”

The Rangers head to Greybull this Friday, Oct. 5.
