Both County Coroner candidates introduced themselves to the Kemmerer City Council at Monday’s Kemmerer City Council meeting.
After Dave Dunn and Mike Richins introduced their competing candidacy, the Council presented Jeff and Vickie Lowe with the Community Pride award.
The Council then moved on to new business in this meeting’s agenda. The first order of business was to appoint Linda Jackson and Glen Williamson to the Kemmerer Main Street Redevelopment Committee, both for 2-year terms.
Jennifer Lasik, the head of the South Lincoln Training and Events Center, requested for approval to apply for a $10,000 grant from Bank of the West. If awarded to Lasik, the grant would help fund a lot of the 2011 Cultural Event Series costs. The council approved her request to apply for the grant.
The Council also approved Lasik’s contract to bring Ken Waldman and the Secret Visitors, featuring Jalan Crossland. This performance will be Nov. 13, 2010, but not part of the Fall 2010 Cultural Event Series.
The Council then authorized the mayor to sign a lease contract with The Original Oyster Grass, Inc. to allow the city property between the Kemmerer Gazette office and the Victory Theatre to be used as a horseshoe pit during the Oyster Ridge Music Festival this weekend. Though the city has never before enforced a lease agreement for such events on city property, city officials thought it would be a good idea to start doing so now, so that if any damage or injury were to occur on the city’s property, the city would not be held liable. The lease agreement enforces a payment of one dollar by the Oyster Ridge company, proving that the lease is not a money-making idea, but a behind-saving idea.
Then the Council approved the City to waive building permit fees on the permit application by the South Lincoln Cemetery. Cemetery officials wish to add 283 square feet on to their on-site garage. The Council typically waives the building permit fees for fellow governmental entities such as cemeteries.
As part of his official comments, City Administrator Mike Archibald noted that the Kemmerer BLM office is still looking to relocate somewhere near town with access to the highways. Archibald also mentioned a Wind Road Show that will be in Rock Springs at the end of next month. He encouraged Council members to attend to learn more about wind energy in Wyoming.
Tony Tomassi was the only council member to provide any comments. He further announced the South Lincoln Training and Events Center Gala coming Sept. 11. The keynote speaker will be Wyoming U.S. senator Mike Enzi. Tomassi also pushed the raffle tickets, which are now on sale at the Events Center.
Tomassi advised that everyone in town should try to get out and vote. And he also wanted to welcome all the visitors coming this weekend for the Oyster Ridge Music Festival.
Mayor Michael Nelson provided a couple quick comments, apologizing for not being able to attend the Music Festival this weekend because of a rare opportunity to visit grandchildren. He also urged people to get out and vote and to support the gala.
The next Kemmerer City Council meeting will be Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. at Kemmerer City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
