KEMMERER — Spring must be around the corner because members of the Kemmerer High School track team have started practice. The first practice of the season was on Monday, March 4, and their first meet is coming up Friday, March 22, in Big Piney.

Head coach Josey Allen told the Gazette that he hopes to instill into his team two values — commitment and effort. He hopes each team member becomes committed to the team, attending all practices and meets and also giving each event they’re involved in their best effort. He also wants each team member to be able to acknowledge his or her accomplishments and that everyone continues to show improvement.

The boys have a young team with only one state-qualifying senior, Matt Archibald, returning from last year.

The girls are missing only one of last year’s state-qualifiers; there is a possibility for a very strong girls’ team this year.

Allen’s goal for this year’s team is to have both the boy and girl’s teams place in the top three at 2A regional competition with most of the team members individually qualifying for state.

He noted that there has been a lot of recruiting for this year’s team, resulting in many first time participants coming out this year, many of which are already showing a great deal of potential. Track, unlike other sports, has no cuts.

“We take you as-is and make you better,” said Allen.

Assisting Allen are Stephanie Birch, Shawn Rogers and Coty Nikont.

Birch will be working with the horizontal jumpers while Rogers and Allen work with the runners and hurdlers. Nikont coaches field events.
