It was a sweep!
Last week’s All Star Golf Match between the north and south high schools’ best senior golfers turned out to be one-sided.
Josh Ness, Kemmerer High School’s only senior on the state championship Ranger golf team from last fall, and, as such, the Ranger’s All Star representative from the South said, “We basically dominated the North.”
Though each day of the three-day event had a different format, and each day was played on a different course, the South team won them all. Certain points were awarded for victories based on low team totals in each event during the tournament.
Ness was accompanied by his high school golf coach Zem Hopkins, who was one of the South team’s coaches.
Wednesday was a traditional golf tournament played at Three Crowns in Casper.
In addition to the traditional scoring, Thursday’s contest at Paradise Valley also saw points awarded for low team score. This score was determined by pairing two teammates and recording the low score of the two players for each hole.
Friday’s match was at the Casper Municipal Golf Course and was based on a 2-man scramble with two players from each team making up a foursome.
While the South as a team won each day, Ness and his partner, Brandon Rideout from Rawlins were the low scorers on the final day.
“It was a really close match,” Ness said. “But it was a lot of fun.”
Ness and Rideout ended up narrowly defeating their North counterparts by a score of 70-71.
When the final tournament points were tallied, the South defeated the North, 13 1/2 points to 3 1/2 points.
“I was really pleased with Josh and all the kids’ participation,” Hopkins said.
Hopkins added that he was especially pround of Josh because he had never played two of the courses before last week.
“It was really fun to play with the kids you were rivaled against during your whole high school career,” Josh said.
Hopkins added, “They made friends all over the state. All the kids bonded, between the North and the South.”
“I made friends with all of those guys, they are a good bunch of guys,” Josh said.
Josh, a 2010 KHS graduate, plans to attend Weber State in the fall and will try out for a walk on spot with Weber’s golf team.
Josh is the son of Tom and Jenny Ness of Diamondville.
