The Kemmerer wrestlers give up a lot of points in forfeits every time they go up against a full team. At their home Bridgerland tournament, they gave up 30 points each to North Summit, Cokeville and Rich County. They gave up another six points to Green River’s junior varsity team.
But in contested matches, Kemmerer’s wrestlers don’t do too bad.
Taken without forfeits, Kemmerer scored 110 to opponents’ 93 in last week’s match-ups. And sometimes, even with them, Kemmerer takes a win.
The day before the big home tournament, the Rangers destroyed Jackson. After giving up 30 points in forfeits, Kemmerer won 37-36 in a tie-breaker. Jackson only took one match, Trevor Ryan’s pin over KHS’s Matthew Endecott. Kemmerer won the rest, with Keanu Slovernick pinning Ceazar Partida 2-0, JT Cattelan pinning Salo Marquina 7-0 and Jerico Birch pinning Mikey Bird 7-4.
Chris Pope, Jesse Schulthess and Dustin Kruckenberg won by decision and Blake Mastrud defeated Conner Malette. “As a team, we probably wrestled the best we have all season,” said KHS wrestling coach Darrell Bullington.
The next day’s competition was a little tougher.
Kruckenberg at 125 had a stellar tournament, taking all four of his match-ups, three with pins. Jerico Birch at 285 also won all four of his match-ups, two with pins and two with forfeitures.
Mastrud and Cattelan both went 3-1.
