Getting tough, making waves
Posted: Thursday, Feb 4th, 2010

KHS sophomore Dillon Dummer won the 100 meter freestyle at the Big Piney Triangular last Thursday, missing state qualifying time by 0.05 of a second.

Qualifying time is 100 meters in 1:07.77. He covered the distance in 1:07.82.

The Triangular meet divided scores as duals between Kemmerer, Lyman and Sublette County. Kemmerer won against Lyman, 99-75 but lost to Sublette 76-107.

Junior Ryan Popp also placed first in one-meter diving. Sophomore Erron Hopkins took second in the 50 meter freestyle, and sophomore Bailey Keetch took second in the 100 meter breaststroke.

Kemmerer got a score of thirds: Dummer in the 200 meter freestyle, freshman Matt Archibald in the 200 meter individual medley, junior Thomas Lozier in the 100 meter butterfly and sophomore Monte Vickery in the 100 meter freestyle.

“This young bunch is getting tougher and will be making some waves by the time we get to state, said KHS swim coach Greg Gray.

The school’s 200 meter freestyle team took first, their 200 meter medley relay took second and their 400 meter freestyle team took third.

“Our guys are swimming tired but giving us great efforts,” said Gray. “We are supposed to be tired at this time of the season, and we are.”

Two days later, the Rangers packed up the bus again and headed to the Sublette Invite in Pinedale. “The boys were up for swimming in a great facility and gave good efforts,” said Gray. “Some even saw improved time.”

In Pinedale, Dummer took seventh with a time of 1:01.54. But this pool is measured in yards, and to qualify for state in yards, a swimmer needs a minute and a second flat.

Dummer also took fourth in the 50 yard freestyle, just behind his teammate Josh Ness, who’s hit only a quarter of a second off qualifying time.

Kemmerer’s top finishers were Popp, first in diving, and Hopkins, who won the 100 yard breaststroke. Lozier took fourth in the 100 yard butterfly, as did Hopkins in the 200 yard freestyle, and Archibald took fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke.

As a team, the Kemmerer boys tied with Lyman for third, beating the Rawlins Outlaws and falling by over 100 points each to Sublette County and Buffalo, who won the meet by a point.

Dummer’s next chances to knock off that final 0.05 are in his home pool today and at Lyman tomorrow and Saturday. Today the Rangers host Sublette County and Lyman in fans’ last chance to see the swimmers in Kemmerer for two weeks.
