Kemmerer’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display gets canceled

KEMMERER — One of Kemmerer’s staple Independence Day celebration activities, the community fireworks display, was canceled.

According to Kemmerer/Diamondville Chamber of Commerce director Terri Picerno, this was due to a lack of support.

“Last year, when we put on the fireworks display there were a lot of people and businesses who said they would donate but didn’t,” she told the Gazette. “I ended up having to pay for most of it myself. What it comes down to is a lack of support and funds.”

Community members took to Facebook and phone calls to the City of Kemmerer to express their unhappiness with the cancellation of the show, leading to an official statement from City Administrator Rebecca Davidson.

“I have been asked quite a bit this week about the public show for fireworks on July 4th,” Davidson said in a statement on the city’s web site. “Historically, the Chamber has managed that fireworks show and the City has only been a contributor and provided $2,000 to the event in the past.”

In the statement, Davidson also mentions that the Chamber did not request the funds for the fireworks show and, due to the short notice regarding the canceling the show, the city wasn’t able to find a way to organize a fireworks display for Friday, July 4. Even so, Davidson stated the city would pursue a plan for multiple fireworks displays for next year.

“The City is planning fireworks at New Year’s Eve and the staff will discuss Fourth of July festivities with Council to plan for a 2015 July 4th fireworks event,” Davidson said in the statement.

Even so, members of the community expressed that they were not given a chance to donate money for the display.

“Never saw anything saying can you donate to the fireworks or any attempts for fundraisers,” Alice Faye Eddy-Sears wrote. “It is always been historically the Chamber of Commerce to organize the fireworks and the city would contribute and almost all the businesses would also.”
