Local service improvement projects under way

KEMMERER — Rocky Mountain Power is investing about $800,000 this year to improve the local electric distribution system serving the north Kemmerer, Frontier and Opal areas.

The core project is the construction of a second power line from the Kemmerer substation to provide back-up capability to the primary power line. The current supply to the north Kemmerer area has been a single line running north along Airport Hill through Frontier then south along Oyster Ridge. In winter weather, this area is sometimes difficult and time-consuming for crews to reach when repairs are needed. The new line will provide Rocky Mountain Power with an alternate path to supply customers in the north Kemmerer and Frontier areas if a problem occurs on the primary line.

“The winter weather in Wyoming can cause serious problems with ice build-up, wind and the resulting damage to our primary line,” said Tim Sehorn, operations manager at Rocky Mountain Power. “Having back-up capability will help us better serve our customers. While we can’t prevent all the problems nature might throw at us, this new line will certainly improve reliability.”

The new line is being constructed to cross the railroad tracks near Spinel Street in the Willow Addition and will connect with the existing line on Pearl Street. When completed in October, the addition will improve reliability for customers in the north Kemmerer area, Pomeroy Basin, Hams Fork Road, Aspen and Willow Springs.

The main transmission line supplying Opal has also undergone extensive maintenance and reinforcement this summer to address the problems of heavy snow, ice and wind. Opal residents should also notice an improvement, says Sehorn.

“Rocky Mountain Power is continuously looking at ways to improve system reliability,” Sehorn said. “Each year, we review the performance of our system and improvement plans are developed. Our goal to continually improve reliability for our customers.”
