Lions Club recognizes student excellence

KEMMERER -- Several students from Kemmerer High School were honored at the annual Kemmerer Lions Club Student Recognition Banquet on Wednesday, May 15.
The students were selected by teachers for awards to honor the students' excellence in different areas. The award subjects ranged from sports to academic subject, including several Advanced Placement (AP) classes.

Justice Center construction on schedule

KEMMERER -- The construction of the new Lincoln County Justice Center began in the fall of 2012, and completion is expected by Feb. 2014, said Lincoln County Commissioner Kent Connelly.
"It's going pretty well right now. We're on schedule," Connelly said.

Slain soldier was former resident

AFGHANISTAN -- One of three soldiers killed by an improvised explosive device in Sanjaray, Afghanistan, May 14, was originally from Kemmerer, according to military officials.
Specialist Mitchell Kirk Daehling, 24, was born in Kemmerer but moved with his family out-of-state when he was 2. He most recently resided in Dalton, Mass., according to his father.

Union Pacific train hauling grain derails in Nugget Canyon

KEMMERER -- In the early morning hours of Saturday, May 18, a westbound Union Pacific train hauling corn derailed in Nugget Canyon west of Kemmerer at mile marker 38 on U.S. Hwy. 30.
According to Mark Davis, spokesman for Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Neb., the westbound train was hauling corn from St. Paul, Minn., to Minidoka, Idaho. Davis noted
